George Wendt, the beloved actor and comedian best known for playing Norm Peterson on Cheers, has died at the age of 76. According to his publicist, he passed away peacefully at home.

Wendt became a television icon during Cheers’ 11-season run (1982–1993), appearing in all 273 episodes. His character’s famous entrance — “Afternoon everybody” — became one of the most memorable running jokes in TV history. His performance also earned him six consecutive Emmy nominations.

Before his TV fame, Wendt trained with Chicago’s legendary Second City improv troupe and later appeared in films and TV shows including Fletch, Gung Ho, and Saturday Night Live. Fans and colleagues are remembering him as a warm, generous performer who brought laughter to millions.

He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Birkett, and their three children.
